Things to do

Here are a few local sights and trips you could consider. There is so much to do from Clayton Cottage in Northumberland

We thought you might find some local information and a few web site links helpful when deciding if this is the right cottage and area for your holiday in Northumberland.

Wooler is about a 10 minute drive away. A small attractive stone-built town, perched high above the Wooler Water and a natural 'gateway' to the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland National Park. The main street, with its inns, specialist shops, working pottery and grocery stores, is the leading but unspoilt shopping centre in the area, and we have always found people friendly and helpful. Wherever you are in the town you are aware of the beauty of the surrounding scenery - on the one side the fell sandstone moors across the valley below - and on the other the beautiful Cheviot Hills rising behind the town to form a magnificent backdrop.

This area provides an excellent base for a holiday. The foothills with their quiet backroads and bridleways are ideal for walking, cycling and riding. Within only a short car journey you can be on the magnificient Heritage coastline of North Northumberland with its spectacular scenery from Bamburgh Castle and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne to Seahouses and the Farne Islands. Alnwick with its historic castle and the famous Alnwick Gardens lie a few miles south while the Scottish Borders are within easy travelling distance from wooler on uncluttered and quiet country roads.

...and if you like castles and ruins they seem to be everywhere!
